A collection of 13 letters from Elisha Ely written from San Francisco, Geyserville, and Clarville, California. In addition,
there is a separate grouping of 10 letters written by Douglass Ely, a brother of Elisha Ely, from the Colorado Springs and
Edgerton [sic] areas of the Colorado Territory written between 1871 and 1874. Each letter includes a full typescript transcription.
Also includes a printed wedding announcement and name cards for Louise (or Louisa?) Ely and Benjamin Fowler in Healdsburg,
Calif. and a typewritten transcript of "The Squatter Wars" in the Healdsburg area by Col. L.A. Norton that includes a resolution
by the Washington township that references Elisha Ely as its secretary.

Elisha Ely was born in New York City in 1825 and graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York in 1848.
In December 1848, four months after the discovery of gold in California, he was one of the first to start for California,
via the Isthmus. He arrived in San Francisco on April 1, 1849, and was, for some weeks, the only physician having an office
in the city. In the following December he lost nearly all his possessions in the first great fire. He then decided to buy
a ranch and began visiting the Sonoma Valley looking for property. In 1851, he settled in the Russian River Valley, erecting
a house near the present town of Geyserville, where he practiced farming as well as medicine.
